2. Renoir Father and Son. Painting and Cinema. | Musée d'Orsay
After making eight films for Hollywood studios, Jean retuned to France, where he directed for almost three years from 1953 to 1956.
The great film director, Jean Renoir (1894-1979) was also the son of a great painter, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919). As such, they both played an exceptional and possibly unique role in the history of art, which remains the focus of fantasy and questions.Towards the end of his career, the director of The Grand Illusion (1937), The Rules of the Game (1939) and A Day in the Country (1936/46) confided: “I have spent my life trying to determine the extent of the influence of my father upon me.” Acknowledging that he always had an ambivalent relationship with his father’s legacy, he describes passing over the periods “when I did my utmost to escape from it to dwell upon those when my mind was filled with the precepts I thought I had gleaned from him.”Both father and son created scenes which gave the appearance of spontaneity, but this natural veneer belied preparatory work and painstaking control of every stage in the creative process. They came to epitomise a quintessential French tradition. They both chose to work surrounded by protective female figures (Aline Charigot, Gabrielle Renard, and Dido Freire) and a close-knit circle of partners, family and friends. Pierre-Auguste and Jean shared models (Gabrielle, Andrée Heuschling), locations (Cagnes, Montmartre), an era (the depiction of the late 19th century), and even themes (women, children, water, shows, dancing, swings).
